< Title >
The Population of Bangladesh: Past, Present, and Future
< Abstract >
Bangladesh, the 8th largest populated country in the world, gained independence in 1971. Bangladesh turned 50 in 2021 and has made remarkable changes in population dynamics- fertility, mortality, and migration. The country is now phasing the third stage of demographic transition with an opportunity to achieve the demographic dividend which needs urgent action while keeping the replacement level of total fertility, addressing adolescent motherhood and their unmet need for family planning, preventing child marriages, and reducing high maternal mortality ratios, addressing population aging, high youth unemployment and increased climate change vulnerabilities are critical challenges. In this regard, this talk will explore the past, present, and future population, focusing on the key demographic processes and determining the drivers of population change and issues up to 2041—the year benchmarked for the country to attain 'developed' status.
